Based on the popular indie title for PC, Pop Cap Games is bringing the fierce side-scrolling action of Heavy Weapon to Xbox 360 Live gamers. Heavy Weapon is set during a turbulent time of war and evil dictatorship. This forces the Allies to whip out a Heavy Weapon assault vehicle. If you’re a gamer who enjoys Xbox Live Arcade games, then you’ll also be treated to new features that include two-player support and enriched graphics for high-definition gaming.
Bring out the weapons of heavy destruction!
The game’s story is fairly straightforward, and gives you just enough reason to want to start blasting things to bits. As it goes, in 1984 there’s been an uprising for the overtaking of the world by the Red Star Forces. Military arms by the allied forces are heavily occupied, and things aren’t looking too good for the world. Conveniently, there’s still one trick left up the sleeves of the Allied forces, and that’s the Heavy Weapon Atomic Tank. Guess who’s driving? YOU!
The gameplay consists of side-scrolling action with crisp sprites and fluid animations. The backdrops have been designed with cartoonish effects and bright, comical themes. Fans of Metal Slug should feel right at home with the intensely fast gameplay set against the colorful backgrounds and sharp graphics. This should bode even better with the inclusion of high-definition support for Xbox 360 gamers.
There are various weapons all designed to inflict your enemies with a vast amount of damage. From lasers and rockets, to homing missiles and nukes, there's enough weaponry for players to level a country. Also, during the action fest you can collect parts to build a super weapon so you can wipe everything out with ease. In between each mission the option to upgrade your Atomic Tank is available, and gives players the ability to enhance their armory or defenses.
Keeping track of your destructive behavior
Pop Cap has also stated in a press release that the game will have available features specifically made for the Live Arcade version. Among these features, the new multiplayer mode seems the most significant, as it was the one thing missing from the PC version. The multiplayer Survival mode will be identical to the Survival mode on the original Heavy Weapon. Primarily, this mode is very much as it sounds: Players are thrust into a do-or-die situation in which they must fight increasingly tougher opponents. The stage scrolls on as the Atomic Tank starts off fighting a couple of tanks and jeeps, and as the Survival progresses, there’s air raids and bombers that also become part of the enemy palate. Except this time, up to four other players can join in on the action. Battling tanks, jeeps, anti-aircraft, planes, and tons of other frenzied enemies will be nothing short of a firestorm of multiplayer mayhem.
Additional features for the Live Arcade version include on-line rankings and score keeping. Players’ scores will be posted on the Leaderboards for comparison to other players. For the first time in Heavy Weapon, there's also the Merit Awards which will be viewable by other Live players. Previously, Merit Awards were given to players who attained a certain high-score, but now it'll mean something when compared to the scores of other Live arcaders.
On a final note, Pop Cap has mentioned how the game’s interactivity will be increased with the ability of using the 360's wireless controllers. The game will finally give a serious “kick” to the player holding the controller. Pop Cap will be taking advantage of the frantic action and the rumble feature for the Xbox controllers. If that’s not enough, players will now be able to use the analog stick to aim the reticle instead of a mouse. Gamers can look for Pop Cap’s Heavy Weapon to hit the Live Arcade sometime later this year.
