Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) Reviews

Carcassonne
Many people can agree that one of Microsoft's biggest sellers is its Xbox Live Marketplace. And it's not just for the nostalgic ports of past greats, it's because many great new games have seen their way onto the marketplace. Games like Aegis Wing, Heavy Weapon, and Carcassonne are all fantastic games for a small price. If you are right now shaking your head and wondering how the latter got in there, it's probably because you haven't tried it, or you haven't given it a chance.

Carcassone, a Sierra ...

Bomberman LIVE
For almost 25 years new, the Bomberman series has been secretly ingraining itself into the video game history books. Bomberman may not be as recognizable as Mario games or the Zelda series, but it's still known to most hardcore and casual gamers alike. It is actually quite impressive when you consider the fact that the series hasn't had many significant gameplay changes over the years (Bomberman: Act Zero does not count!).

This is due to the simple fact that the game is just plain fun. It was fun ...

Boom Boom Rocket
Music based rhythm games seem to be coming out of the woodwork recently. If it isn’t a new release for Guitar Hero, it’s an update to the popular dancing game sensation Dance Dance Revolution. It was only a matter of time then, when Xbox Live would come along with their own entry into this still relatively untapped market (I mean where is Drum Hero). Built by the boys and girls who brought us Project Gotham Racing 3, Boom Boom Rocket is exactly what you’d expect from a downloadable rhythm ...

Heavy Weapon
Alive! They’re still alive! Not even multi-core processors and lightning-fast GPUs can keep 2-D gaming at bay. Recent additions to this genre do nothing but solidify this realization. Konami’s newest Castlevania, Portrait of Ruin, was another strong title in the long-running series; Xbox Live Arcade’s Assault Heroes is a stellar overhead shooter; and most recently—and the title of discussion—we have Heavy Weapon, also for Xbox Live Arcade.

There’s no story backdrop to be had here. Heavy Weapon is what it is: a side-scrolling tank shooter with power-ups, special ...

Roboblitz
If there was ever a game that screamed mass-appeal on the Xbox Live Arcade, this is it. Running on the same engine that powers the almighty Gears of War, Roboblitz gives you all the proof in the world that even the smallest of developers can churn out amazing results. It isn’t just the sheer fun of Roboblitz either; it is the fact that everything has had an amazing amount of care and attention lavished upon it. The fun, the intuitively fresh gameplay, and the seemingly stunning graphics, makes you ...

Small Arms
Small Arms is that type of game that is relatively easy to review. It doesn’t have a whole lot of depth, but for an Xbox Live Arcade title, the game is simply stunning. It doesn’t have the lasting appeal of a full title, but the fact simply is: it doesn’t need too. This is the type of game you can fire up, and within seconds you’re blowing up small animals and miscellaneous creatures for the sheer fun of it. Small Arms successfully pushes the boundaries of what independent developers ...

Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged
For those unfortunate Xbox 360 owners who don’t have Xbox Live and want to try some of the more popular Xbox Live Arcades titles, Microsoft has attempted to solve your problem. Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged is a simple compilation of various Xbox Live titles which Microsoft has deemed are worthy of putting on a disk. One has to wonder on Microsoft’s taste though since some of the games are spot on while others are just downright boring.

Filling out the ranks in the compilation are Bejewled 2, Geometry ...

DOOM
Is playing an old game really that much fun? This is the question millions of Xbox 360 owners will have to ask themselves before investing their time, energy, and ultimately money into the latest Xbox Live Arcade title, DOOM. No, not DOOM 3 but the original DOOM released back when many of the younger gamers didn’t even know what a PC was, much less how to use one. Now that we are all grown up, Microsoft is hoping that the allure of trying out a classic – which cemented ...

Time Pilot
Though aircraft shooters have seen many variations, they all hold to the same standard: they’re damn hard. Konami is no rookie to the market. In fact, their new Xbox Live Arcade game, Time Pilot, is a classic from 1982, and it is an overall difficult game. However, while most shooters like Gradius, another Konami title, are linear (restricted to lateral or horizontal movement only), Time Pilot moves in 360 degrees, similar to games like Geometry Wars.

Outpost Kiloki X
It’s very apparent that Microsoft is interested in the “little guy”. Whether this is due to lack of ideas on their part or a sincere appreciation and desire for more obscure or cultured games, Microsoft is looking to all avenues for their Xbox Live Arcade offerings. To drive this point further, Microsoft even offers a set of development tools, called XNA Game Studio Express, to anyone interested in building a game, asking them to bring their work to XBLA. Before this announcement, however, some companies went about this ...
